July

Wednesday, 29th July – International Friendly with La Manga Club, Spain
We hosted our International Friendly Fixture against La Manga Club on Wednesday, 29th July. The teams met for dinner at The Plough in Stoke D’Abernon the evening before, where the draw for the groups took place and set things up nicely for the match. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day, and Leatherhead came out on top with a 2–1 win.
It was a great fixture, and a big thank you to Gabby for making it happen this year.

Wednesday, 29th July – Charlie Mist Midweek Medal

David Rowling claimed the Charlie Mist Medal with an excellent nett 67, finishing one shot clear of Greg Bailey in second place on 68. Doug Ettridge secured third place with a nett 69.

Sunday, 26th July – LGOY #7 - George Simon Belle Stableford

Catrin Roberts topped the leaderboard with 35 points. Sue Choularton finished second with 34 points, with Jane Jones third on 33.

Saturday, 25th July – Men’s Captains Day Stableford

Sunshine, a shotgun start and 93 golfers made this year's Captains' Day a memorable one. The day, which is a Major Board Competition, took place on Saturday 25 July.

Apart from the golf, there were numerous other fun activities happening on the day, including a BBQ by the 15th tee box area serving traditional South African ‘Boerewors Rolls’ and loads of liquid refreshments being available at various locations on the course.

As we have become used to in the recent past, the golf course was presented in great condition despite the difficult dry and hot weather conditions we experienced during the summer.

To start the prize giving on the day there was a presentation to Moira who decided to retire on the 1st of August after managing the halfway house for 16 years where she ensured we were all well fed and hydrated during our rounds of golf.

Overall, it was a fantastic day with some great golf being played and loads of fun being had by everyone who participated. Most importantly, a large amount of funds was raised for the captain’s charity, Princess Alice Hospice, made possible by the very generous donations from members of the club on the day.

The results on the day were as follows:

Winner: Oscar Conner – 41 points

2nd place: Laurence Charter – 40 points

3rd place: Eddie Later – 39 points

4th place: Sean Thomson – 39 points

5th place: Jake Portch – 38 points

There were also numerous winners of nearest to the pins on the par 3’s, longest and straightest drives, nearest the pin for 2 on the 13th, beat the pro (Tom) on the 15th as well as nearest to the Springbok on the 18th green. This all culminated in the now traditional shoot out from the veranda to the 18th green of which the overall winner was Jake Rowe.

Once again, a huge thank you to everyone that participated and to those who worked so hard in the background and behind the scenes to make the day the success that it was.

June Harris won the Midweek Stableford with a fantastic 42 points. Lorna Dolinska was in second place with 39 points. Sue Choularton in third with 38 points.

A tightly contested George Simon Tray saw Tony Leslie take the honours with 39 points. Just one point behind, Vern Crittenden claimed second place on 38, with Stephen Northeast also posting 38 to secure third on countback. A competitive day all round with very little separating the top spots.

Wednesday, 15th July – Jim White Trophy Midweek Medal

Brian Rafferty delivered an excellent nett 64 to win the Jim White Trophy, finishing clear of the rest of the field. Behind him, both John Pearson and John Pettet carded nett 71, with John Pearson taking second place on countback and John Pettet completing the top three.

Wednesday, 15th July – Ladies Grandmother Trophy

The Grandmother’s Trophy is always a real favourite on the ladies’ calendar. It was Jane Northeast who took the honours with a well‑earned 38 points. Jane Jones was in second place, and Gabby Coates completed the top three.

Saturday, 11th July – Professional’s Day

George Hawkes and Maverick Boylan‑Gore topped the leaderboard with an excellent 60 points. Jamie Harrington & Damien Gray followed in second place on 53, with Donovan Reid and Scott Glover taking third spot with 51.

One of the standout moments came towards the end of the day, when former World Trick Shot Champion Geoff Swain put on a brilliant live show from the first tee. He kept everyone thoroughly entertained with an impressive mix of trick shots, humour and audience participation - pulling members in to join the fun. It was a fantastic day and thoroughly enjoyed by all the members.

Tuesday, 9th July – Surrey Women’s Golf: The Druce Trophy

The Druce is an annual event run by Surrey Women’s Golf, with teams from 60 clubs across the county taking part. It’s played as a 36‑hole eclectic foursomes medal and is always a well‑supported and enjoyable day. This year, Leatherhead was represented by Kinga Nemes & Lorna Dolinska in the morning, with Susan Jacquest & Jane Jones taking over in the afternoon. Our very own Sue Chou was also on duty throughout, supporting Surrey Women’s Golf as part of the event team. The team did the club proud, with Leatherhead finishing mid‑table on what turned out to be an extremely hot day. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and was hosted this year by Betchworth Park.

Catrin Roberts finished close behind in second with a nett 72, and Jennifer Tracey took third place on a nett 73. Under Club Rules, Rosie hadn’t been a member long enough to take home the Trophy itself, but it was a very impressive start at Leatherhead and a strong beginning to her season.
