Ladies reach Pearson knockout stages

For the fifth time in a row, Leatherhead's Pearson team ladies have reached the knockout stages of the Surrey inter-club event. They topped their league table after a great 5 v 2 win away at Bramley on Wednesday.

Their progress in this year's competition, in which 62 clubs played their first matches back in October, had depended on a result in their table being played elsewhere on the same day. It was a nervy few hours after the Bramley win before Pearson captain Jane Northeast learned that Walton Heath had beaten Dulwich & Sydenham at home by a tight 4 v 3 score. We owe the Walton Heath captain a drink for winning on the 22nd hole!

That result meant both Leatherhead and Dulwich & Sydenham had won five out of their six matches, but Leatherhead went through having won 27 games in their six matches compared with Dulwich's 23 games.

The Pearson team now face home and away ties against Worplesdon, who were beaten semi-finalists in last year's Surrey Cup finals day. The matches need to be played by April 14th.

Ace for captain Steve

Congratulations to captain Steve who recorded his second hole-in-one during Wednesday's stableford. The ace came on the 15th hole, along with five points that helped him top the leaderboard.

Thanks to Glenn Sturgess for the photographs.

Jane and Sue bow out of the Daily Mail Foursomes

Jane Northeast and Sue Choularton lost their first round tie in the Daily Mail Foursomes against Tyrrell's Wood. Their opponents took them to the 21st hole, so it was a very close match. Imagine Jane's face when she went in the bar after the game to discover there was no vodka in the house!

The draw for this year's Daily Mail Foursomes knockout competition, in which the leading male and female pairs reach a national final in September, has been made.

Leatherhead's men's pair of Olly Clements and Patrick Urey, who qualified as 2022 runners-up in the Nicholls Cup, have been given a bye in Round One.

Our lady representatives - Jane Northeast and Sue Choularton - have a Round One home tie against Tyrrell's Wood.

Course improvements underway

The drainage work being carried out on the 9th, 12th and 17th holes is called the Passive Capillary Drainage system and golfers playing on Wednesday had a good look at the trenches made on the 12th to accommodate the fibrous drainage elements which will draw water away from the green.
