Vets Captains Day

Forty intrepid ladies and gentlemen took part in the Vets Captains “Wave” Competition on Wednesday 28 June. Everyone enjoyed themselves and there was some great golf played (Including a 2 for 6 points by Ann Whittaker on the 2nd hole!).

In a closely fought battle the Winning team with a great score of 101 was, Steve Tucker, Steve Harrison, Steve Harcus and Ian (Steve) Cooke.

The team coming 2nd with 96 points was Brian Rafferty, Ann Whittaker, Ken Bridgeman and Julian Martin.

Unfortunately the team collecting the wooden spoon with a very creditable score of 82 was Peter Boyd, Keith Clanfield, Leonie Finch and Ulrich Vosloo!

Nearest the pins were won by Steve O’Hara (2nd), Sue Choularton (9th), Ian (Steve) Cooke (12th), Ulrich Vosloo (15th) and Gary Tollick (18th). Nearest pin in 2 on 13th was Nick Taylor who also won nearest the line on the 5th.

Fourball vouchers were auctioned afterwards which raised another £300 for the Captains Charities.

Thanks to all that supported the day and good luck to all in the forthcoming Club Championships!

Cheers Tim

Alf Perry Trophies

It was a tight finish for the ladies' Alf Perry Trophy competition on Saturday, with Jane Northeast winning on countback against runner-up Catrin Roberts and Camilla Mott in third spot. All scored excellent medal scores of 71 in the hot conditions, but Jane's back nine - which was two over-par on gross - was enough for her to win the trophy.

The men's GOTY3 Alf Perry Medal competition, played on 4 June, was won by Jake Rowe with an excellent nett score of 63, runner-up with a net 65 was David Napier.

Fun Friday Victors

It was certainly a Fun Friday at the club on June 9, with 11 pairs competing in a 9-hole competition featuring a 'kick, throw and piece of string'. The masters of those three skills, plus a bit of golf, emerged as Steve Northeast and Tim Smith. Our club captain and his vice beat Jane Northeast and Sue Choularton by one shot/kick! Please put the next Fun Friday in your diary, which takes place on July 7.

Singing Hills Seniors Open 2023

Another great turn out for this compelling competition with teams of six playing “betterball pairs” stableford over the three Singing Hills combinations Lake/River, River/Valley & Valley/Lake with a team total to decide the Seniors Champions for 2023.

Pictured below are the winners Leatherhead (minus one) who last won this Trophy back in 2012 and normally send two teams as much for the banter & bragging rights on the day as anything else & it could not have been closer between the sides with Leatherhead “1” joining The Dyke & Brighton & Hove on 117 points total but pipped by 3 points as Leatherhead “A” amassed a magnificent 120 points comprising of:

Tim Smith & Derek Hughes with 44 points.
Ian Larter & Nick Taylor with 37 points.
Steve Northeast & Vernon Crittenden with 39 points.

Vernon’s 3 for 4 points on the 402 yd Valley 2 par 4 & 4 for 4 on the 486 yd par 5 Valley 9 probably getting them over the line. These lucky Gent’s each took away a Cart Bag each as their spoils and know

Leatherhead will once again adorn the Singing Hills Open Honour Board for 2023.

Outside of the winning team there were prizes of shirts for each of the best combinations with

Phil Young & Phil Smith from The Dyke winning Lake/River with 43 points.

Rick Priest & Ian Senior from Goodwood winning River / Valley also with 43 points.

Last but not least Tony Richardson & David Rowland from Brighton & Hove powered to a staggering 48 points over Valley/Lake with 24 points on each nine but included a 5 point hole on the long par four 5th index 4 at 424 yds that Tony managed to hole his second shot on after a drive & 6 iron!!

Spreading more good cheer around the teams a dozen golf balls were on offer for each of the NP’s:

John Bateman – Royal Eastbourne 9th River in 1.
John York – Haywards Heath 9th Lake in 2
Nick Taylor – Leatherhead “A” 9th Valley in 3 (to 6 inches!)

We hope to see everyone in on the 5th June 2024! Paul Gibbons – Golf Secretary
